Prime Sportsbook is now officially the 17th available sportsbook in the state, adding its services to one of the most storied sports betting territories in the United States. Currently, Prime Sportsbook is only available on desktop platforms, but bettors should expect to see their New Jersey betting app hitting mobile stores in the near future.

The timeline of New Jersey’s 17 sports betting sportsbooks launching in the state was a whirlwind of anticipation, legislative maneuvers, and eager market entry.

It all began with the monumental overturning of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) by the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018. This landmark decision paved the way for states to legalize sports betting within their borders. New Jersey, already a pioneer in the fight for legalized sports betting, wasted no time in capitalizing on this opportunity.

Just a month after the Supreme Court’s ruling, Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Bill 4111 into law, officially legalizing sports betting in New Jersey. This move set the stage for a flurry of activity as casinos and racetracks scrambled to secure partnerships and launch their sports betting operations.

The first sportsbook to open its doors in New Jersey was Monmouth Park Racetrack, in partnership with William Hill US, on June 14, 2018. This historic moment marked the beginning of a new era for sports wagering in the state. Shortly after, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and Ocean Resort Casino followed suit, launching their own sportsbooks and attracting eager bettors from across the region.

As the summer progressed, more operators joined the fray, including major players like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM. Each launch brought with it a wave of excitement and speculation as sports fans eagerly embraced the opportunity to bet legally on their favorite teams and events.

By the end of 2018, New Jersey boasted a total of 10 sports betting operators, with more on the horizon. The momentum only continued to build in the following years, with additional casinos, racetracks, and online platforms entering the market.

Today, New Jersey stands as one of the premier destinations for sports betting in the United States, with a diverse array of options for bettors and a thriving industry that shows no signs of slowing down.
