Atlanta Dream vs. New York Liberty Preview and Prediction

The WNBA is heading towards the playoffs, and we have a terrific Thursday night matchup when the New York Liberty (17-5) hosts the 13-10 Atlanta Dream. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and the contest will be played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The Lady Liberty are looking for their fourth consecutive victory and welcomes an equally hot Atlanta Dream side, winners of eight of their last 10.

Who will win this important WNBA Eastern Conference showdown? Find out with our preview and predictions for the Atlanta Dream vs. New York Liberty on July 27.

Dream Putting Opponents to Sleep

The Atlanta Dream enter this contest on an 8-2 run over their previous 10 matchups. The Dream is 4th in the league in scoring and is a top-five team in nearly every statistical category. They draw the second most fouls in the league, and if the regular season ended today, Atlanta would be seeded fifth for the 2023 WNBA playoffs.

The Dream is led by the three-pronged attack of Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, and Cheyanne Parker. Howard leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. Gray shares the assist lead with Howard, and Parker is the squad’s top rebounder with an above-average shot from inside and outside the arc.

Lady Liberty Tops in Eastern Conference Standings

The Liberty are on a three-game winning streak and have won eight of their past 10. New York is the top three-point shooting and passing team in the game and second in nearly every other offensive category. They are the best team in the East, and if the playoffs were to begin today, the Liberty would be the second seed.

The Lady Liberty boasts five players scoring in double-figures. Breanna Stewart leads New York in scoring, averaging 22.6 points with a team-high 9.3 caroms per contest. Sabrina Ionescu is second in scoring, assists, and is the team’s top sniper from downtown.  Jonquel Jones has the highest field goal percentage and pulls down the second-most rebounds per game, and Courtney Vandersloot is New York’s assist leader.

Atlanta Dream vs. New York Liberty Best Bet

The Liberty is playing exceptional basketball, and my best bet is for New York -8.5 (-110) at DraftKings.

New York has routed Atlanta in two of their three contests this season, and the only reason the Liberty lost their one game to Atlanta was because Ionescu was out with a hamstring injury. Otherwise, New York would be playing tonight for a sweep rather than the season series victory they will get Thursday.

The Dream has some serious talent on the squad, wins on the road, and can hang offensively with anyone. Still, Ionescu spreads the floor just enough that it allows Stewart and Jones to cut to the bucket, and it’s usually a layup city for the Lady Liberty, and the lousy Atlanta defense just can’t stop that.

Finally, an underrated aspect of the Liberty is its team defense. They may allow the fifth-most points per contest but are second in the league in defensive +/- and have held the Dream to 83 points or less in their three contests this season.

Meanwhile, the Dream is one of the worst defensive teams in the game, and New York has scored 100 points twice against them. New York is a matchup nightmare for Atlanta, and my best advice would be to lay the points and take New York to cover the -8.5 (-110) at DraftKings New Jersey
