2023 MLB Opening Day Betting Preview: Yankees and Mets in Action

The 2023 MLB Opening Day is finally here, and fans of the New York Yankees and New York Mets are hoping for a repeat of their 2000 Subway series. Both teams are projected to be at or near the standings and could possibly meet in the World Series.

The Yankees begin their 2023 season with Game 1 of a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants. RHP Logan Webb is the Giants probable starting pitcher and the Yankees will counter with RHP Garrett Cole.

The Mets are in Miami for a three-game series beginning Thursday with NL East division foe Miami Marlins. RHP Max Scherzer makes the start for the Mets, while 2022 NL CY Young winner Sandy Alcantara takes the hill for the Marlins.

New Jersey Sportsbook Bonuses To Use On These Games

Betting NJ has compiled a list of all the promos at sportsbooks in New Jersey. This list contains the various promotions and bonuses the New Jersey sportsbook operators offer.

Read the terms and conditions for each promo and bonus so you know exactly what is expected of you and what you can expect from the bookies.

San Francisco Giants vs. New York Yankees 1:05 pm

The Giants are a +150 underdog with a 7.5 run total when they play the New York Yankees in the first of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

San Francisco is +6000 favorite to win the World Series and Webb is coming off a solid season where he started the All-Star Game and is +3000 favorite to win the NL CY Young Award.

Webb has good control, doesn’t allow that many home runs, and was 15-9 with a 2.90 ERA. New arrivals Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger are expected to play major offensive roles for a Giants offense finishing 23rd in team batting average.

New York is +750 favorite to win the World Series and Gerritt Cole is +650 to win the AL CY Young Award. Cole led the AL in strikeouts and was 13-8 with a 3.50 ERA but allowed a career-high 33 bombs in 2022. Reigning MVP Aaron Judge is +500 to repeat after a 62-homerun season–the Yankees offense is loaded from top to bottom and returns the majority of their lineup.

Phil’s Best Bet: Giants F5 Under 3.5 -103

We have two of the best pitchers in the game, and with the opening day jitters, not to mention a forecast calling for sunny but brisk temps. Hitting in NY in March isn’t much fun, and our two starters have the edge through the early innings of this contest.

Webb hasn’t seen much of these Yankees, but Cole has a solid history against the current Giants’ bats, and it wouldn’t surprise to see a 0-0 score through the first five innings.

New York Mets vs Miami Marlins 4:05 pm

The Mets are -125 favorites with a six-run total when the two National League East rivals meet at 4:05 pm at LoanDepot Park.

New York is +950 favorites to win the World Series but +170 favorites to win the NL East. Scherzer is an +800 favorite to win the CY Young Award and a future Hall of Famer coming off an injury-plagued season, resulting in an 11-5 record with a 2.29 ERA over 145.1 frames. The Mets are an above-average offense led by Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo.

Miami is +2000 long shots to win the NL East, but reigning NL CY Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara is a +450 favorite to win again. Alcantara was dynamite for the Marlins last season and is a big strikeout pitcher with 16 bombs allowed over 224.2 innings pitched.

Miami was 28th last season in runs scored–Luis Arraez and Garrett Cooper are expected to lead the offense. The off-season addition of Jean Segura is another dependable bat they didn’t have last season.

Phil’s Best Bet: Miami F5 Under 3 -110

We have two pitchers throwing in the Florida sunshine–Scherzer is a veteran bulldog coming off a tough season, and Alcantara is the reigning CY Young winner and young bulldog. Scherzer is known to surrender a long-on or two occasionally, but he won’t have to worry much about that against the light-hitting Marlins in their HUGE ballpark.

Alcantara threw more complete game shutouts than anyone last season, and the Mets bats are usually boom or bust. Three runs is too many for Thursday.
